Missed opportunity

October 28th, 2009

I found this image while rummaging around which I forgot to add previously, it was an idea I had planned to use on Project: VOM. Unfortunately as with most of the other aspects I ran out of time.

Scouts

October 28th, 2009

I got around to finishing off a sniper squad I started about 6 months ago. The paint was piled on quite thick on the already completed minis. Since then I’ve learned to water down my paints quite a bit. Managed to complete the remaining 3 guys quite quickly ( a week and a half which is pretty good for me)

I plan on getting back to Skull Taker next and then my Ultramarines dreadnought.

Project VOM: Going overboard

September 18th, 2009

I’m not good at meeting painting deadlines. I’ve set my own painting targets in the past and never seem to meet them, either because I become distracted by something else or I inevitably spend too much time on one project. That being said 6 weeks seemed like ample time to complete my latest venture.

Roll on Kingdom of Adventures Pirate Painting Competition. The criteria was to come up with something ‘Piratey’ and so I spent a few days podering on what I could come up with.
Given my interest is primary 40K, Orks naturally seemed the way to go with there pirate like qualities, I had many of the Ork figures unassembled from the Black Reach box set so this reinforced the initial thought. The warboss was the most imposing figure so it made sense to work with him.
Now how to piratize the figure? A hat? Good start but we need more. A plank! A Space Marine being made to walk the plank by the warboss! Hmmm could be tricky. I know a ship! Well maybe if I can make one. So after tossing around loads of ideas in my head project VOM was borne.

I wanted to build a pirate ship but had very little scratch building experience. I also wanted to do this as cheaply as possible. I scoured the internet looking for ideas on how to go about building a ship but found nothing so in the end I scribbled some ideas down on paper of how I might go about this.

Next I checked my material stock. I’ve been hoarding lollipop sticks for months thinking they might come in handy for some future terrain project. I had foam board and plastic tubing left over from a previously failed scratch built drop pod. I also had some fantasy terrain sprues picked up at last years game day that could lend some touches to the ship.

After a few hours messing about this was the initial result:

Eeeek. I thought of abandoning here. The thing was clearly looking questionable. Over the next few weeks I decided to keep at it, until eventually I could see it taking shape. I won’t bore you with every detail but here’s a few pics to show how it progressed. I managed to spent about an hour or so every night on it

Ok it’s getting there but we need a sail me hearties. Paper, a printer and some PVA glue be the answer.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a sea for it to sail on?

Alright this is starting to look the part but I now found myself with 2 weeks left to go and no crew onboard. Whilst I had been building the ship I’d ordered a few minis and bits to crew it. I wanted a suitable ‘idiot’ character to walk the plank and found him on coolmini’s shop.

Village IdiotAmmo GrotsOrc Shields

I painted my idiot first and wanted to base him on a certain comic book owner who owns the following t-shirt. Given it said crewman it also fit in well.

Ok dokey got the idiot done now just to finish the ork warboss. Given this was a painting competition I wanted to do him do a very good standard. I’d done quite simple drybrushing on the ship and the ‘idiot’ had only taken a a couple of days so now to concentrate on old Orky.

To finally cut a very long post short I ran out of time. I had to abandon a lot of ideas I had and didn’t actually manage to finish the ship in the way I intended. I spent this morning hastily finishing the paint job on my ork warboss which was a shame as I’d spent considerable time keeping quite a precise job only to finish up slapping the paint on him and abandoning some highlighting. That being said the end result was still decent.

I probably could have spent another 6 weeks on this and still not have finished it to my satisfaction. I thoroughly enjoyed working on it though. Despite the shortcomings of the end job the fact I had a deadline to work to kept me focused and interested. Whereas I would normally have several distractions on the go at once, this competition has been my sole painting outlet for the last 6 weeks and actually resulted in a ‘finished’ project. If only self imposed deadlines could have the same effect!

Latest Acquisition

August 11th, 2009

I picked this lot up from Taylor at my club for a very modest fee.

greyknights

I don’t have a codex yet (getting that in a few weeks) but here’s what I think I have (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on any of this).

  • 9 Grey Knight Terminators (5 in box)
  • 18 Grey Knights in Power Armour
  • 2 Justicars (Looks like Master of the recruits / Master of the arsenal models)
  • Landraider Crusader with Forge World doors
  • Dreadnought missing leg guard
  • 15 Inquisitorial Storm troopers / 7 Other Guard Models
  • 3 assassins
  • Inquisitor (I think)
  • 3 other dudes (henchmen of some sort?)
  • 2 servo skulls

I plan to eventually (possibly many years from now when I’m a senile and withered old millionaire) strip the models and repaint in my own colour scheme.I’ll be using Dettol for the plastic and something else to strip the metal. If anyone has any particularly effective paint stripping methods please let me know.

I’ve nearly finished Skull Taker but haven’t managed to get much painting time in lately. Hopefully I’ll have him finished by the end of this week.

Then I plan to get back to my Forge World dreadnought and do a little more on something I’ve started for KOA’s Painting Competition.

Army Calculator

July 30th, 2009

I was sorting through some of the files for the club web site on my computer today and came across some unfinished (unfinished I know what a shock) javascript applications I had been thinking of adding to the site.

This was my first attempt at a space marine points calculator. I wanted something similar-ish (albeit more simple) to army builder. Unfortunately as I went on with it, it became apparent the code was too rigid to support other armies and would become redundant quickly. You can have a play around with it here. This version does not work in internet explorer AFAIK, only Firefox.

I then started on something that was more generic and would allow me to easily add other armies. I haven’t touched the code in months though as my time has been very limited of late. You can find it here here. This one works in both IE and Firefox.

Unpainted Collection

July 29th, 2009

I’m waiting on my camera batteries recharging to take a picture of skull taker so in the mean time thought I’d update the blog. I’ll be getting back to the club to play some games twice a month now, so I’ve been thinking I should make a real push to get stuff painted to at least a basic level (can highlight later).

In a most likely futile bid to try and structure which models to paint next (and attempt to discourage me from more spending) I thought it might be a good idea to catalogue what I actually have already have and what work it requires. The following list is off the top of my head so undoubtedly it’ll not be complete but here goes:

  2. (HQ) Chaplain with jump pack (Under coated)

  25. (Fast) 3 x scout box (Mostly assembled)
  26. (HQ) 1 x Blackreach captain (unassembled)

Imperial Guard

  1. (Super Heavy) Baneblade (Still in box)
  2. (Troops) 10 x Cadian fellows

Chaos Daemons

  1. (Troop) 10 x Blood Letters (Nearly finished / fix bases and a few touch ups)
  2. (Troop) 10 x Daemonettes (In the box)
  3. (HQ) Khorne Daemon Price (As is in the previous photos)
  4. (HQ) Skull taker (In progress)
  5. (Fast) Juggernaut Fellow (In box)

Misc

  1. Gamesday 09 Chaos Champion (InĀ  Blister)
  2. Several Space Wolf models inc. tech priest, 3 metal marines and about 10 plastic guys (probably try and sell)

I’m sure there is more stuff but that’s all I can think of for now. I seriously surprised myself by about 12 on the marines list. That is a shocking number of unfinished figures. Must try harder Fox.

Skulltaker

July 18th, 2009

Have been on holiday in Shaftesbury/Weymouth for the last 2 weeks and didn’t get any painting done the week prior to this. I did take Skull Taker down with me though for the rainy days. Decided to paint him to try and get more of my daemons finished and also to submit it for a little painting challenge Ryan is running at the club to encourage people to get there unpainted figures finished. Have spent about 4 hours on him so far.

Ultramarine Venerable Dreadnought Update 2

June 28th, 2009

I managed to get loads of painting time in on Sat for the first time in ages so I did a bit more on my ven’ dreadnought.

Khorne Daemon Prince (aka K-horny Devil)

June 25th, 2009

I finally got my filthy mittens on this rather impressive Daemon Prince on Sunday (Thanks again George). Apart from the dreadnoughts (which were easy to build) this is the first Forge World model I’ve had to assemble. The non existent instructions proved to be very helpful.

Most of it was fairly straight forward to put together though, but for a relative novice like me it would have been very easy to inadvertently cut some of the smaller pieces off incorrectly from the ’sprue’, haven mistaken them for misshapen resin blobs. The various teeth parts for some of the skulls are proving tricky to attach as they’re so small. I’ve also lost one which will need to be replaced with a green stuff substitute or left out altogether.

The axe shaft was very badly curved. After looking at the bag I saw the helpful tip of putting misshapen pieces into warm water to reshape them. After trying this and getting the shaft semi straight (no jokes please) I then tried fitting it to the already glued on arms….. It proved not to fit now appearing too long to slot into the arms.

So after giving it to a talented friend to work on, I received it back with a replacement detailed aluminium rod shaft which is pegged and can be removed for painting. It looks much better than the bent thing he couldn’t wield before.
